Ellis Island, located in New York harbor, was the gateway through which more than 12 million immigrants passed between 1892 and 1954 in their search for freedom and opportunity in the United States.
"The New Colossus," the 1888 poem by the Jewish immigrant Emma Lazarus, includes the famous lines, "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free" that are engraved on a plaque in the Statue of Liberty.
