Further information
Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical comedy, portraying romantic and professional rivalries among the cast and crew of Me and Juliet, is a classic backstage musical. The behind-the-scenes setting gave believability to the musical genre, in which characters burst into song and launch into dance.
In Mielziner's sets, the proscenium arch of the show within the show is often positioned off-center to reveal the behind-the-scenes action. In the nightclub scene, a chorus girl and the assistant stage manager embrace in the wings as the actors playing Carmen and Don Juan dance on stage.
