Further information
Brooklyn's Coney Island, with its beaches, boardwalks, amusement park, and hot dog stands, was the summer retreat for all of New York City. This resort on the Atlantic Ocean was the setting for By the Beautiful Sea, a ca. 1900 romance between a vaudeville performer and a Shakespearean actor.
As a New York Times critic noted, "With a Coney Island setting, Jo Mielziner has all the latitude he needs for gaiety and splendor." In this curtain design, the sun-drenched sands of the beach are contrasted with the cool shadows under the boardwalk and punctuated by the brightly striped umbrellas.
