An aspiring fashion designer in depression-era New York, Flora (played by Liza Minnelli) is torn between professional ambitions and political ideals.
Flora the Red Menace takes place in 1935, amidst bread lines, apple sellers, and a tent city in Central Park. During the Great Depression, Communism appealed to many Americans, including Greenwich Village intellectuals like Flora, and her artist boyfriend, Harry.
In Jean and William Eckart's design, Flora graduates from the "High School of Commercial Art" against a backdrop of classified ads. She gets a job as a fashion illustrator, but the department store is not a union shop, and she has to cross the picket lines, testing her loyalty to Harry and the Party.
