Deeply undercut surfaces, suggesting entwined thick fibers of a basket, resemble several similar capitals said to come from the cloister of the Romanesque Collegiate Church of Saint Peter and Saint Gaudens in Haute-Garonne, near Toulouse, France. Master craftsmen carved the decorative column capitals in the 1100s. In similar works, such as one at the Cloisters of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, offshoots and palmette-like leaves further enhance the latticework.
