Conductor Sergei Koussevitzky commissioned Natalia Gontcharova to paint four panels depicting each of the seasons as people. The woman depicted in Summer wears a pale pink dress and walks barefoot through a blooming forest. Flowers are beneath her feet, embroidered on her garments, and woven throughout her hair and veil.
