Further information
The apostles James, John, and Peter were all followers of Jesus of Nazareth. They were with him the night before his crucifixion, as he struggled to come to terms with his impending death. The three fell asleep in the garden that night to be awakened by Jesus and chastised for their lack of attention. This painting was originally part of the predella, or lower part, of an altarpiece.
