Bonaventure was a Christian saint who lived in the 1200s and is often shown dressed in the brown habit of the Franciscan order with a cardinal's red hat. A man of intellectual and spiritual humility, he was considered a great scholar. Always clean-shaven because he died at a relatively young age, Bonaventure usually carries a book to signify his writings. This painting was originaly part of the upper tier of an altarpiece.
