Theatre production
Musical with book by James Lapine and lyrics and music by Stephen Sondheim. Produced at the Martin Beck Theatre, New York, 1987.
Further information
Influenced by psychological theories, Sondheim and Lapine explored the deeper meanings of fairy tales in their fractured retelling of the stories of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack in the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel. These and other characters embark on a journey of self-discovery when they enter the "inner darkness" of the forest.
In Sondheim's version of the fairy tale, Rapunzel is locked in the tower by her mother, a beautiful woman turned into a witch.
