Further Information:

Manet's representation of a day at Longchamp, the racetrack in the Bois de Boulogne outside Paris, is one of the most daring lithographs produced in the nineteenth century.

With its energized and quickly drawn lines, and its highly dramatic perspective, this image gives one the sense of being right at the track, or perhaps leaning over the rail, anticipating the excitement of seeing the horses as they fly by. In this print, form -- in this case, the frenetic lines - is wed to the content. How better to suggest the agitated and excited atmosphere of the races than with lines that are themselves drawn in an agitated and excited way?
