Further Information:

Among the images in the painting's blue background, Chagall included the Russian village of his birth, whimsically drawing upon memories of neighbors visiting over the fence. Sun and moon shine simultaneously, and a cow playing a stringed instrument may refer to Chagall's love for music.

In a lower corner of the window, lovers embrace, perhaps a reference to Chagall's courtship of his wife. Similar couples appear in his works as early as 1911-14 and as late as 1983. He wrote of his courtship: ...she brought to my studio sweet cakes from her house, boiled milk, all sorts of decorative materials, even some boards which I used for an easel. I had only to open my bedroom window, and blue air, love, and flowers entered with her.

Chagall's expressive use of color and varied paint application, from thin glazes to thick textured areas, contribute to the dreamlike quality of the work.
